YourTour - Explore like never before.

Frequently Asked Questions by Explorers

1. The Basics

YourTour is a huge step forward in guided tours – it brings the world around you to life by turning your mobile into a personal interactive tour guide via immersive, insightful and unique walks through fascinating places. You can:

  • Skip, pause, repeat – explore at your own pace, in your own time.
  • Tour solo or go social and listen together with friends and family
  • No upfront cost or subscription – you choose how much to tip

It’s a community for the curious and passionate to experience new places, rediscover their own region or share their own passion for a particular place or subject by building a tour.

YourTour – explore like never before!

The YourTour app can be used by anyone over the age of 18 (or with parental consent from the ages of 8-18).

OK, here’s the science bit: Each tour takes place in a specific location and guides you along a route. The app uses the phone’s in-built GPS technology to ensure Explorers (yes, that’s you) always know where they are and are listening to the right audio and viewing the right images at the right time.
Tours are typically 30 minutes to an hour, but can take longer if you stop and explore along the way.

2. The Tours

Tours are 100% free to download and listen to as you explore. There’s no upfront cost or subscription – you simply choose how much to tip the Author at the end!

You simply select how much you want to tip, and – hey presto – you’ve shown your appreciation! The Author will then be notified that you’ve made a tip.

The Authors spend a gargantuan amount of time making and perfecting each tour so, if you liked – or loved – the tour, please show your appreciation by tipping them. More tips = happy Authors = more tours!

Authors do all they can to make sure that your experience on their tour is the best it can possibly be. However, there’s an important role you play in this as well: leaving them reviews and feedback.

Whether there is something you’d like us to improve upon, or you’d just like to express your thanks for a job well done, your feedback is essential in helping Authors revise and hone their tours so that they can amaze and enlighten future Explorers.

You sure can – each tour requires only GPS, which does not need mobile data on. So simply download any YourTour in advance, switch off your mobile data and get touring!

Please note that the YourTour app requires your Wi-Fi to be turned on but you do not have to be connected to any Wi-Fi network. There are two reasons for this:

  1. Apple’s location detection works much better when Wi-Fi is enabled
  2. The YourTour app uses “ad hoc” Wi-Fi so that the sync with friends feature can work without a data or network connection.

If you’re having issues downloading your tour on site, it’s probably due to poor reception on your phone. Head to the nearest Wi-Fi spot, connect and download. Then go explore!

Syncing with friends is whole load of fun really easy to do. Simply:

  1. Download the tour you want to listen to (only the Host needs to do this)
  2. Arrive at the start location of the tour
  3. Ensure that Wi-Fi is enabled on all devices
  4. Open the tour in the app
  5. Click on the Sync with friends button
  6. Add the friends you want to sync with

While there is no limit to the number of people that can be in a sync group, we recommend 4 or less for best results.

There’s no doubt that being on location is the best way to experience a tour. YourTour uses your phone’s location information to play all the right audio at all the right places along the route of the tour.

However, there may be times when you simply can’t be at the location, but still want to enjoy the audio, which is why we’ve enabled Explorers to tour ‘remotely’ from the comfort of their own sofa! Simply download the tour you’re interested in, tap ‘Begin’ tour, and you’ll be given the option to take tour remotely.

This is likely due to your phone’s inability to accurately identify your location. Try opening any map app (Google Maps or Apple Maps) to see if they’re not working too.
Other solutions to try include:

  1. Checking that your Wi-Fi is turned on. If it is, turn it off and or turn it off and then on again, because we use the help of Wi-Fi to help improve your location detection
  2. Check your phone settings to ensure your location permissions are on
  3. Putting your phone into airplane mode (this turns your cell signal off) and then turning it on again to force a reset.

Of course, it may be possible that the starting location is a poor area for GPS. If that’s the case, then it may be best to move onto the second Stop.

To delete your downloaded tours, simply:

  1. Tap on the “My Tours” tab
  2. Tap on the trash icon in the top right hand corner of the tour you’d like to remove

To protect your privacy and battery life, YourTour uses the Apple permission setting of “While Using the App.” So, the app only has access to your location while the app is open and visible on your screen, or while you are actively listening to tour audio while the app is in the background.

So how do you see a notification when you reach the start of a YourTour while the app is in the background? Apple added a way to allow users to be notified of interesting nearby content without informing every app of their current location. That way, users are made aware of location-based content without having to sacrifice their privacy.

As sad as we would be to see you go, simply email us at hello@goyourtour.com and we’ll remove you from our system right away.

We take your security very seriously at YourTour. That’s why we use the latest technology to ensure that your data is protected. Here are some things you can do to stay safe online:

  • Use a strong password that mixes upper case letters, lower case letters and numbers
  • Verify your email address
  • Never give your username and password out to people you don’t know and trust

Happy exploring!
