The Wallace Collection displays the wonderful works of art collected by the first four Marquesses of Hertford and Sir Richard Wallace, who is thought to have been the 4th Marquess’s illegitimate son. It was opened as a National Museum in 1900 and is free to enter. Inside you will find an amazing variety of art objects, including Rococo furniture, chandeliers and clocks. There is an outstanding array of eighteenth-century French art, and many important paintings from the 16th to 19th centuries, including masterpieces such as Frans Hals’ ‘Laughing Cavalier’, and Nicolas Poussin’s ‘Dance to the Music of Time’. Among Medieval and Renaissance works of art you can see one of the finest collections of princely arms and armour in Britain, as well as Limoges enamel, Italian Maiolica and Venetian glass. The collection of Sevres Porcelain is one of the largest outside France. Come join me on this fascinating walk through history and art. Shall we begin?
