The North Bank of the Thames here used to be overlooked by imposing mansions belonging to great Lords and Bishops. All are long gone or radically changed. We will explore their history and discover surprising remains as well as dramatic views of later buildings. Highlights include Somerset House, an imposing building in the classical style, which houses one of London's finest art collections - the Courtauld gallery, and Waterloo Bridge. You will also pass the Savoy, one of London's most famous hotels, and see London's oldest monument, Cleopatra's Needle, before ending up at York Watergate where you discover how far the Thames stretched before the nineteenth century embankments were built.
